Escape from Urk
Making history fun
Help Pieter escape the rapidly rising waters and this terrible flood disaster!
In 1825, a relentless northwesterly storm brought a terrible tragedy to the Netherlands. The storm caused high water levels and dike breaches, leading to the devastating flood disaster of 1825. Urk, then still an island in the Zuiderzee, was severely affected by the natural disaster. The consequences were dramatic. Houses, farmland, and livestock on Urk were swept away by the rapidly rising water. The residents of Urk, accustomed to living in harmony with the sea, suddenly found themselves powerless against the turbulent forces of nature. Many sought refuge on the few higher areas of the island and on the roofs of their houses, where they helplessly watched their life’s work and possessions being swept away. Dike breaches led to floods, forcing residents to flee their homes, their hopes and dreams lost in the rapidly rising water.
